Butler Picks Up BIG EAST Road Win
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Sophomore Vincent Mitchell and junior Zach Steinberger each scored a goal and the Bulldogs' defense did the rest to lead Butler to a 2-0 victory over Seton Hall on Saturday, Oct. 12. It was the first BIG EAST road victory for the Bulldogs, who improved to 3-1 in conference play.
Mitchell broke a scoreless deadlock with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. The Butler midfielder took a cross from teammate A. R. Smith in front of the net and re-directed it past Seton Hall goalkeeper Julian Spindler. It was Mitchell's second goal of the season, both coming in a four-day span.
The goal by Mitchell gave the Bulldogs (9-3-1) a 1-0 advantage at halftime. Steinberger then added an insurance goal 31 minutes into the second half, scoring off a free kick from 25 yards out. It was his sixth goal of the season.
That was more than enough for Butler's defense. The Bulldogs blanked Seton Hall on 12 shots, including five shots on goal. The home squad had four shots on target in the final period, but goalkeeper Jon Dawson stopped all four. Dawson finished the game with five total saves, while recording his fourth shutout of the season. He improved to 8-3-1 on the year.
Steinberger, Mitchell, Smith and freshman David Goldsmith each had a pair of shots for the Bulldogs in the win. Smith had a shot on goal in the second half, but it was stopped by Spindler. Seton Hall (4-6-2, 1-3 BIG EAST) had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks in the match.
Butler, coming off back-to-back contests at Marquette and Seton Hall, will continue its stretch of road matches with a visit to nationally-ranked Georgetown on Saturday, Oct. 19. The Hoyas were ranked No. 9 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America national poll. The match in Washington D.C. is slated for a 1 p.m. (ET) start.
