INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler men's soccer team kept its season alive Friday night with a 2-1 win over Xavier on Senior Night. The win vaulted Butler into the BIG EAST Tournament and guaranteed another matchup with Xavier.
"Xavier is a quality outfit, we knew that coming in," head coach Paul Snape said. "We got a win when we needed one. They'll be tough again on Tuesday, but we'll be ready."
On a night in which seniors Jordan Burt, Jon Dawson, Adam Glanzer, Austin Oldham and Blake Leyden (below with families) were recognized, the Bulldogs came out aggressive seeking a victory. Butler nearly scored in the first minute of the game, but sophomore Vincent Mitchell's shot was just wide.
"Obviously we wanted to win for Butler, but we really wanted to send our seniors out on a good note," Snape said. "This group has contributed so much over the past four years, it feels great to send them out right."
The Musketeers scored first in the 34th minute and went to half ahead by one score. Butler came out and scored the tying goal in the 49th minute when Mitchell took a double-assist from junior Zach Steinberger and sophomore Jeff Adkins and buried it from five yards away, his fifth of the season.
Butler's second goal came in the 65th minute when junior Brandon Fricke took a free kick from Adkins and scored from directly in front of the goal. The score was Fricke's third of the season.
Dawson picked up his 19th career win and ninth of the season, improving his record to 9-7-1 in goal this season.
Butler secured the final spot in the six-team BIG EAST Tournament with the win. The Bulldogs will play Tuesday night in Cincinnati. Live stats can be found on ButlerSports.com.
