The Butler men's soccer team kept their season alive Tuesday night with a 1-0 victory over Xavier in Cincinnati. The win came in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament. Butler moves on to face No. 2 seed Marquette on Friday in Philadelphia.
"Really happy with the win," head coach Paul Snape said. "It was a real good performance against a tough, attacking opponent."
Freshman David Goldsmith scored the game-winning goal for the Bulldogs in the 28th minute. His 12th goal of the season came off an assist from senior Jordan Burt. Goldsmith buried the shot into the left corner of the goal.
"We caught them on the counter and executed the game plan well," Snape said. "Really extremely proud of the boys, they dug in against a good opponent."
Senior goalkeeper Jon Dawson turned in a gem between the pipes. He saved four Xavier shots in a full 90 minutes of action.
The Musketeers led the Bulldogs in total shots on the night by a 14-4 count. Xavier also held the advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Friday's opponent, the Marquette Golden Eagles, beat the Bulldogs 3-2 in double overtime back on October 9. Sophomore Vincent Mitchell and junior Zach Steinberger both scored in the contest for the Bulldogs.
"We're going to have a game plan ready and we think we can compete," Snape said. "We can enjoy the win, but we need to stay focused."
The game will be played at 8:30 p.m. ET at Philadelphia's PPL Park.
