The Butler men's soccer team saw their season end in overtime Friday night with a 0-1 loss to Marquette in the second round of the BIG EAST Tournament in Philadelphia.
Marquette's game winning goal came in the 97th minute when senior Adam Lysak scored directly off a rebound.
Butler had 17 shots in the game, eight of which were on goal. Senior goalkeeper Jon Dawson saved nine shots and went the distance, but took his eighth loss of the season. His record on the season stand final at 10-8-1.
BIG EAST Rookie of the Year David Goldsmith had four shots, three of which were on goal. Sophomore Jeff Adkins led the team with five shots. First team All-BIG EAST player Zach Steinberger had three shots in the contest, two of which were on goal.
Butler ends the season with a 11-8-1 record overall and a 4-6 record in the conference.
The Bulldogs were picked eighth in the BIG EAST Preseason Poll but surprised many early on, jumping out to a 6-1-1 record before conference play started. They did not suffer their first home loss until October 23 at the hands of Creighton.
The season was highlighted by wins over nationally ranked Louisville, defending national champion Indiana and back-to-back wins over Xavier. The first win over the Musketeers secured a tournament spot for the Bulldogs and the second advanced them to the semifinal round.
Butler was ranked as high as No. 16 nationally in the NSCAA Coaches Poll.
