Senior Eduardo Garcia scored on a penalty kick with less than five minutes remaining in the first half to help lift Butler to a 2-1 victory over Cincinnati in an exhibition match at Gettler Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Sunday (August 17). The match was Butler's first competition of the season.
Cincinnati jumped to an early lead in the match when Matt Bahner took a pass from Luke Henke and slipped a shot past Butler goalkeeper Fabian Knopfler at 9:21. That lead stood for less than eight minutes, when senior Frank Patano tied the match on an unassisted goal.
Garcia then provided the game-winner, after being fouled at 41:50. He blasted his shot past Cincinnati goalkeeper Matt Williams to give Butler a 2-1 lead. That proved to be the final score, as the two teams battled to a stalemate through the final 49:10.
The Bulldogs finished with an advantage in shots, 11-8, and corner kicks, 6-2. Sophomore Ben Sippola led Butler with three shots, while Patano, junior Boris Gatzky and sophomore Kyle Pateros each added two shots.
Butler head coach Kelly Findley played all three of his goalkeepers, and the trio blanked Cincinnati over the final 80 minutes of the match. Knopfler played the entire first half and picked up the win, while junior Nick Hegeman and freshman Nick Powell combined to shutout the Bearcats in the second half.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday, August 23, in an exhibition match against Butler's alumni team. That match is slated for 4 p.m. at the Butler Bowl.
