Scott Hoch scored a pair of goals to lead #10-ranked Furman to a 4-0 shutout over the visiting Butler men's soccer team at the Spinx/Land Rover Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C., on Friday, Sept. 6. The Bulldogs, who have faced three "Top 10" opponents in their first three matches this season, fell to 1-2 on the year, while Furman improved to 2-0.
Hoch tallied the game's first goal just over 15 minutes into the contest after taking a cross from teammate Sergei Raad. Furman made it 2-0 at halftime when Raad headed in a cross from Chefik Simo at the 33:27 mark. Hoch and Simo each added a goal in the second half for the final tally.
Butler, which played a man short for the final 60 minutes of the contest after junior Ryan Marques received two yellow cards, managed just three shots in the match. Furman pounded 18 shots at Butler goalkeeper Grant Barrie, who finished the game with five saves. The Paladins attempted 13 corner kicks to none for Butler.
The four-team tournament will continue on Sunday, Sept. 8. Butler will face its fourth consecutive "Top 25" team with a noon match against #19 Kentucky, while Furman will meet #23 Creighton.
