Sophomore John Mariscalco scored a goal and added an assist to help power Butler past Valparaiso, 5-1, in the Bulldogs' home-opener at Varsity Field on Sunday (Sept. 7). The victory boosted Butler to 1-1-1 on the season, while Valparaiso fell to 0-3.
Mariscalco served a header to teammate Andrew Pancio, who converted the goal from directly in front of the net for the first score of the game. The goal at 38:40 was Butler's first of the season, and it gave the Bulldogs their first lead in a match this year. It was the fourth career goal for Pancio.
The Bulldogs' lead lasted less than three minutes. Valparaiso's James Flugstad tied the match on a header off of a long throw-in by teammate Nate Hyde. That tally at 41:05 tied the match, and the first half ended with a 1-1 count on the scoreboard.
Mariscalco ended the deadlock and provided the Bulldogs with the game-winner on a shot from 18 yards in front of the goal. The shot rolled past Valparaiso goalkeeper Jeff Oleck and into the left corner of the goal at 62:55. Junior David Wyrick served the pass to Mariscalco, who recorded his first career goal.
Butler added three more goals in the final 14 minutes of the match. Senior Ryan Marques scored on a header at 76:32, after taking a pass from sophomore Scott Olsen. Junior Cory Edgington took a long pass from senior Tony Been and beat Oleck in a one-on-one situation for a score at 82:56. And freshman C. D. Longo closed the scoring with a goal at 89:13, after taking a pass from senior Yohei Ohta. It was the first career goal for all three players.
Butler had a decisive, 21-6, edge in shots in the match. Goalkeeper Evan Reinhardt picked his first career win for the Bulldogs, while recording three saves. Oleck had eight saves for the Crusaders.
