A late comeback attempt came up one goal shy and Butler suffered its first men's soccer loss of the season, 3-2, at Evansville on Sunday, Sept. 7. The setback left the Bulldogs at 3-1 on the year, while Evansville improved to 3-0.
The host Purple Aces built a 3-0 lead in the match at McCutchan Stadium, scoring twice in the first half and adding another goal 17 minutes into the second period. Tom Irvin gave Evansville the lead in the 31st minute and then Mike Luttrull made it 2-0 four minutes before halftime. Irvin's goal was the first scored against the Bulldogs this season.
Luttrell's second goal with with just over 23 minutes left in the contest gave the Aces a commanding advantage, but the Bulldogs stormed back behind a relentless attack.
Butler ended the shutout bid at 73:54 when sophomore Connor Burt took a throw-in from junior Kyle VondenBenken and slipped a shot past Evansville goalkeeper Alec Duffy. The Bulldogs struck again three minutes later on an unassisted goal by sophomore Ben Sippola from 16 yards out.
The Bulldogs continued to attack in the closing minutes, but couldn't get another shot past Duffy. Butler out-shot the Aces, 13-6, in the second half and finished with an overall advantage in shots, 18-16. The Bulldogs had eight shots on goal, but Duffy responded with six saves.
Senior Eduardo Garcia led the Bulldogs with three shots on goal, while VondenBenken had a pair. Eight different Butler players attemped a shot in the match.
The Bulldogs will have a week off before traveling to Chicago, Ill., to take on DePaul on Sunday, Sept. 14.
