John Mariscalco had just one shot on goal, but it was enough to give Butler a 1-0 upset of host Kentucky in the final match of the UK Invitational played at the UK Soccer Complex in Lexington, Ky., on Sunday (Sept. 21). The win knocked Kentucky (4-1-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten, and lifted Butler to 3-2-1 on the season.

Mariscalco nailed the decisive goal after taking a pass from teammate Scott Olsen at 13:26 of the first half. He fired a shot into the back right corner of the net, past Kentucky goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum. It was his second goal of the season and the second of his Butler career.

The Bulldogs managed only three additional shots in the match, including just one in the final 45 minutes. But a resilient defense, sparked by goalkeeper Evan Reinhardt, turned away every offensive thrust by the Wildcats. Reinhardt recorded five saves in the match, while improving to 3-1-1 on the season. Kentucky attempted eight shots in the final period and 13 for the match.

Butler placed three players on the all-tournament team, and, not surprisingly, all three were defenders. Seniors Ryan Marques and Tony Beer joined sophomore Brad Johns on the 11-player all-tournament squad. Louisville claimed the tournament title by defeating Butler, 2-1, and Central Florida, 1-0, while the Bulldogs finished runner-up.
