Nick Pantazi and Michael Mariscalco combined for three goals and three assists to lead the Butler men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over UIC on Sunday, Sept. 22 at Varsity field. The victory gave Butler a 2-5-1 record, while UIC left with a 3-4 mark. Both teams stand at 1-1 in Horizon League play.
The Bulldogs started their charge early by putting two in the back of the net in the first 28 minutes. The first goal came at the 5:32 mark when Pantazi took a cross from Mariscalco and slipped a shot past goalkeeper Ross Cain. Ryan Marques started the play with a long pass to Mariscalco. Later in the half, Pantazi returned the favor and gave Mariscalco an open field opportunity, which resulted in a 2-0 lead at the half.
Pantazi scored his final goal 17 minutes into the second half on a cross from Mariscalco. Andrew Pancio opened the play by threading the ball through defenders to Mariscalco. The goal was Pantazi's third of the season.
UIC turned up the pressure in the second half and blasted 12 shots at goalkeeper Grant Barrie. Barrie had six saves on the day while only giving up one goal. The Flames gave a late charge with eight minutes left in the game and scored their only goal when Pete Kelley sent an open field shot past Barrie. UIC out shot Butler 17-12.
Butler will play its next match at home on Friday, Sept. 27, against the Panthers of Drury.
