Butler turned to its defense to pull out a 1-0 men's soccer victory over Western Kentucky in a match played in Bowling Green, Ky., on Friday night (Sept. 26). The boosted the Bulldogs to 4-3-1 on the season, while Western Kentucky fell to 2-5-1.
The Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when freshman Aaron Thompson took a pass from sophomore Brad Johns and slipped a shot into the back of the net. It was the first collegiate goal for Thompson, a starting defender for the Bulldogs, and the first assist of the season for Johns, another starting defender.
Butler made that 1-0 lead stand with a tenacious defensive effort. The host Hilltoppers, saddled with a three-match losing streak, were aggressive on offense from the start. Western Kentucky out-shot the Bulldogs, 8-3, in the first half and 13-6 in the final period. The Hilltoppers had an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Kentucky native Evan Reinhardt turned in another strong outing as goalkeeper for the Bulldogs and recorded his fourth shutout in seven starts this season. Reinhardt, who improved to 4-2-1 on the year, had seven saves, while the Bulldogs added a team save on a clutch deflection by senior defender Tony Beer.
Butler will continue its weekend road trip with a match at Evansville on Sunday, Sept. 28.
