Jose Chairez scored two goals in a five-minute stretch of the second half to give Evansville a 3-1 victory over visiting Butler in a non-league men's soccer match at Black Beauty Field in Evansville on Sunday (Sept. 28). The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 4-4-1 on the year, while Evansville improved to 5-2-2.
The host Aces jumped in front on a goal by Dan Broxup just nine minutes into the contest. But the Bulldogs stormed right back and tied the match on a goal by sophomore John Mariscalco at 15:21. The Butler midfielder took a pass from junior Andrew Pancio and drilled a shot into the back of the net from 10 yards out. It was Mariscalco's third goal of the season.
The two Indiana squads battled to a stalemate from that point, until Chairez broke the tie at 61:59 with a goal from 12 yards out on the left side. Five minutes later, Chairez scored again from three yards out.
Evansville had a 12-5 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Mariscalco led the Bulldogs with three shots in the match.
Butler goalkeeper Evan Reinhardt went the distance for the Bulldogs and fell to 4-3-1 on the season. He had two saves in the match.
The Bulldogs will play their third consecutive road contest on Thursday, Oct. 2, at Indiana. Butler's next home match will be on Sunday, Oct. 5, against Horizon League foe UW-Green Bay. The match at Varsity Field is slated for 1 p.m.
