Indianapolis - Sophomore Kyle Pateros scored his sixth goal of the season in the 65th minute to give Butler the victory over #4 UIC in Indianapolis on Saturday. The win was the first for the Bulldogs over a ranked opponent since they beat UIC when they were ranked 17th in 2006.
The loss was UIC's first of the season and dropped them to 8-1-4 overall and 2-1-1 in the Horizon League, while the Bulldogs improved their record to 8-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in league play.
Butler coach Kelly Findley described the win as, "A big thing when a team has been at the top of the league. It puts our team in good shape for the top of the league."
The Bulldogs started the game off confident with great ball control and movement down the field but could not find the back of the net in the first half and trailed in shots 4-3.
The second half saw a complete change in offense, with the Bulldogs putting up seven shots, including the goal by Pateros in the 65th minute off a shot from the top of the box. Senior Frank Patano picked up his second assist of the season on the goal. Butler would then go on to control the reminder of the game.
Coach Findley attributes the win to the team's character and also the fact that, "We were more fit and it showed in the second half".
Junior Nick Hegeman had 3 saves in the goal for the Bulldogs and improved his record to 6-1-2 on the season.
The Bulldogs will step out of Horizon League play and face cross town rival IUPUI at the Butler Bowl in Indianapolis on Tuesday at 4:00pm.
