Senior Eduardo Garcia scored a pair of goals and sophomore Ben Sippola added a third to lead Butler to a 3-1 victory over Wright State at Alumni Field in Dayton, Ohio, on Saturday (Oct. 18) evening. The win lifted the league-leading Bulldogs to 4-0-1 in Horizon League play and 10-2-2 overall.
The Bulldogs ended a scoreless deadlock and took command of the match in a span of nine seconds late in the first half. Garcia struck first, gathering a deflected shot off the foot of junior Boris Gatzky and blasting it past Wright State goalkeeper Matt Koewler from eight yards out at 39:21 It was his second goal of the season.
Nine seconds later, Sippola captured the ball on the restart and launched a line-drive shot from 40 yards out into the upper right hand corner of the net. The lightning strike was Sippola's second goal of the season and gave Butler a 2-0 lead at halftime.
The Bulldogs made it 3-0 in the 58th minute when Garcia took a long pass from sophomore Kyle Pateros and beat Koewler to the far post from 12 yards out. It was Garcia's 12th career goal.
Wright State (3-10-1, 2-2-1 HL) ended the shutout with just under eight minute remaining on a goal by Anthony Smerk from 20 yards out.
Garcia led the Bulldogs with four shots, including three shots on goal, while senior Frank Patano added three shots. Wright State had a 14-10 advantage in shots in the match, but both teams had five shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Nick Hegeman improved to 8-1-2 with his third straight victory. He had four saves in the match, giving him 32 saves on the season.
The win was Butler's third in a row and fifth in the last six matches. It gave the Bulldogs 10 victories for the first time since 2004.
Butler returns home for its next two matches, beginning with a non-league test against Eastern Illinois on Tuesday, Oct. 21. That match at the Butler Bowl is slated for 4 p.m.
