Junior Cory Edgington scored two second half goals to lead visiting Butler to a 2-1 victory over Detroit in the final Horizon League match for both teams at Titan Field on Sunday, Oct. 26. The win lifted Butler to 9-6-3 on the season and gave the Bulldogs sole possession of second place in the final league standings with a 5-1-1 mark.
Edgington broke a scoreless tie at 55:44 on a header off a corner kick by teammate Andrew Pancio. The two had teamed on the same play for the game-winner in Butler's 3-2 victory at Cleveland State on Friday (Oct. 24).
Detroit (7-8-1, 4-3 Horizon League) tied the match at 70:18 on a goal by George Kithas, before Edgington nailed his second consecutive game-winner at 81:38 off a deflection by goalkeeper Matt Strabbing. The two goals boosted Edgington's season total to a team-high nine tallies.
Butler was out-shot in the match, 13-10, but the Bulldogs had a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Junior Evan Reinhardt went the distance in goal for coach Joe Sochacki's club, and he recorded four saves while picking up his ninth win of the season.
The Bulldogs will close out the regular season with non-league matches against IUPUI and Oral Roberts. Butler will host a first round Horizon League Tournament match on the weekend of Nov. 8-9.
