Woods Wins At 6 To Clinch Butler Victory
INDIANAPOLIS - The fate of the match rested on 6-foot-8 redshirt freshman Brandon Woods, and the Australian lefty didn't disappoint, winning at No. 6 singles to lift the Butler men's tennis team to a 4-3 win over IUPUI.
After Butler had already won at Nos. 2, 4, and 5 singles, Woods found himself down 5-2 in the first set against IUPUI's Louis Sacks. Woods made a comeback to win the set in a tie-breaker, then finished the match with a 6-3 second set.
Sophomores Sam O'Neill and Billy Weldon each won 6-0, 6-0 at Nos. 4 and 5 singles. Pulok Bhattacharya added a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles.
Austin Woldmoe and Tommy Marx each lost in three sets. IUPUI won a very closely-contested doubles point. Woods and O'Neill won in a tie-breaker at No. 2 doubles and Weldon and Woldmoe fell 9-7 at No. 1. IUPUI's Jason Jaruvang and Jacob Hedderig held on 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
The win over IUPUI, who had beaten Butler the last two seasons, evened BU's record at 7-7 on the year. The Bulldogs have won three matches in a row and four of their last five. BU will play at DePauw Wednesday, March 6.
