WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sam O'Neill, a sophomore from New Zealand, advanced to the semifinal of the Flight C singles main draw to lead the Butler men's tennis team at the Purdue Invitational.
Sophomores Billy Weldon and Austin Woldmoe combined for a championship berth in the A Flight doubles draw to highlight doubles play.
O'Neill won three matches, including a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Arthur Dobradin of Purdue. In the quarterfinal, he cruised 6-2, 6-0 past IUPUI's Jacob Hedderig. O'Neill's run ended in a loss to Nicky Wong, who won the tournament.
Weldon and Woldmoe combined for four wins before falling in a tie-breaker championship match. Their run to the Flight A final included wins over teams from Purdue and Xavier. Woldmoe also won a match in the Flight A singles draw.
The Bulldogs' next fall event is Sept. 28-29 at Ball State. That will be their final fall tournament before the ITA Regionals in October.
