A new coach, a new conference and a new season. The Butler men's tennis team opens its 2013 season this weekend with a pair of matches under first-year head coach Parker Ross.
“I've been really looking forward to the start of the spring season since our fall season ended back in October,” Ross said. “I feel this group of guys is as prepared as they have ever been because of their tremendous work ethic both on the court and in the weight room.”
Butler, under long-time head coach Jason Suscha, became known for playing a very challenging schedule. This year is no different, as BU's first dual match of the season is at Purdue Saturday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs then return to Indianapolis the next day for a home match against a solid Toledo team.
Other standout teams such as Ohio State, Vanderbilt, Iowa, Indiana and Notre Dame also appear on the slate.
"We have a challenging schedule ahead of us, but I know that all the guys are confident in their ability to play and compete at the highest level, and now they get to go out there and do it.”
Butler returns five starters from last year's team. All five are still just sophomores, signaling a bright future ahead for Ross' squad. The team also adds a tall and powerful left-hander in Brandon Woods. According to Ross, the redshirt freshman from Australia figures to add another dimension to the Bulldogs' lineup.
"We are excited to finally have our freshman Brandon Woods in the lineup," the Butler coach said. "I think he can contribute a lot to our team's success this year.”
Following the opening weekend against Purdue and Toledo, Butler will play road matches against nationally-ranked teams Ohio State and Vanderbilt.
