INDIANAPOLIS - Nine home matches, four contests against BIG EAST opponents and a league tournament at the USTA National Tennis Center highlight the 2013-14 Butler men's tennis schedule.
Coming off a season in which they improved their win total by six from the 2011-12 season, the Bulldogs will play at DePaul and Marquette while hosting Xavier. BU will also take on Creighton at Marquette in a neutral-court match.
"I think we have a great opportunity to win a lot of matches this coming year and build off the momentum of last year," head coach Parker Ross said. "We are excited to have scheduled four of the seven other BIG EAST teams and look forward to playing Georgetown, St. John's and Villanova the following year."
The season opens January 22 at Ohio State. The home opener is two days later when ASA College visits. Overall, four of the first six contests are at home with Valparaiso, Bradley and Indianapolis coming to Butler early in the season.
Butler (10-12 last season), which won a first-round match in the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship, will also play solid Midwest programs Northern Illinois, Louisville, Ball State, Duquesne and Cleveland State on the road. Toledo, IUPUI and Wright State will each come to Butler in February.
Perhaps most notably is the team's opportunity to play in the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, which is the home of the U.S. Open.
"That's going to be a great experience for our guys as we continue to grow the program and transition into the BIG EAST," Ross said.
In the fall, Butler will be in action three times. Ross will take his squad to River Forest, Ill., Sept. 13-14 for the River Forest Invitational. A tourney at Purdue follows, then the fall season concludes at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals at Knoxville, Tenn.
