Basketball players Gordon Hayward and Melanie Thornton have been named recipients of Butler’s Most Outstanding Athlete Award for 2009-10. The two standout performers were among four student-athletes recognized by the Butler athletic department with year-ending awards.

The Butler women’s basketball team is headed for postseason play for the second straight season. After concluding the regular season 21-8 and 14-4 in the Horizon League, the Butler women’s basketball team highlighted the league’s women’s basketball postseason awards. Senior Melanie Thornton was named Horizon League Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year while senior Susan Lester was voted the league’s sixth player of the year.

A win in Saturday’s regular season finale at Loyola can clinch the No. 2 seed for the Butler women’s basketball team. A Ramblers win could clinch the No. 5 seed, while a Butler win drops them to No. 6.

Senior Melanie Thornton scored 18 points and the Butler women’s basketball team made a series of late stops to preserve a 64-59 win at UIC Thursday evening. The win was historic on several fronts. BU (20-8) has now won 20 games for the third consecutive season. Also, head coach Beth Couture picked up win No. 125 and she has now won more games at Butler than any coach in school history.

Bulldogs Host IPFW In Home Opener
The Butler women’s basketball team will host IPFW Wednesday, Nov. 18 in what will be the Bulldogs’ home opener. Butler has defeated IPFW in four of the last five meetings, including a 72-56 win last year in Fort Wayne. BU is aiming to rebound after a season-opening loss at Kentucky on Sunday (Nov. 15).

Bulldogs Drop Season Opener At Kentucky
Kentucky’s Victoria Dunlap scored 33 points and grabbed 18 rebounds as the Wildcats defeated the Butler women’s basketball team, 87-66, Sunday afternoon at Memorial Coliseum. Junior Brittany Bowen had 16 points – all in the 1st half – to lead the Bulldogs.

Butler Opens Season At Kentucky
Coming off a 20-12 season and a WNIT appearance, the Butler women’s basketball team tips off the 2009-10 campaign at Kentucky Sunday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Big Blue Sports Network and FSN South. The Bulldogs face a UK team that opened the season Friday (Nov. 13) with a 92-58 win over Boston University.

Butler Women’s Basketball Adds 3 Players In Early Signing Period
The Butler women’s basketball program has added three players in the 2009 Early Signing Period. Sarah Hamm, Amanda McDivitt and Jenna Cobb have each signed a National Letter of Intent and will play basketball for the Bulldogs beginning in fall 2010.

Bulldogs Win Exhibition, 78-47
The Butler women’s basketball team won its only exhibition of the season, 78-47, Monday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Three players scored in double digits to lead the Bulldogs. BU, which is coming off a 20-12 season, tips off the regular season Sunday, Nov. 15 at Kentucky. The game is slated to start at 1 p.m.

Bulldogs Host Exhibition Against DePauw Monday
Butler basketball fans can get their first look at the 2009-10 women’s basketball team Monday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. when the Bulldogs host an exhibition game against DePauw. The Dogs are coming off back-to-back 20-win seasons and return four starters from last year’s WNIT team.

Butler Duo Named Preseason All-Horizon League
Butler senior forward Susan Lester and junior guard Brittany Bowen were each voted preseason All-Horizon League. Lester, who enters the season with 994 career points, was a first-team honoree while Bowen was voted to the second team.

Bulldogs Picked 3rd In Preseason Poll
After making its first postseason appearance since 1998, the Butler women’s basketball team was picked to finish third in the Horizon League this year in the league’s preseason poll. The Bulldogs received 234 points and three first-place votes in the 28-voter poll.

Former Butler women’s basketball standout Lade Akande has taken a position as an admissions counselor in the Butler University admissions office. Akande, a 2009 BU graduate, finished second in school history with 1,705 points.

Bulldogs To Take Part In Cancun Thanksgiving Classic
While the weather in Indianapolis is likely turned towards winter, the Butler women's basketball team will be spending its Thanksgiving weekend in far warmer climate, as the Bulldogs will travel south to Mexico to take part in the 2009 Cancun Thanksgiving Classic from Nov. 26-28 at Kuchil Baxal Gymnasium.
