INDIANAPOLIS - Thirteen home games and a Thanksgiving weekend trip to Cancun, Mexico highlight the 2009-10 Butler women's basketball schedule. Head coach Beth Couture announced the schedule Wednesday, Sept. 2.
The Bulldogs, who advanced to the second round of the WNIT last season, will play six games against five teams that reached the postseason in 2009, featuring NCAA participants Green Bay and Ball State.
After opening the 2009-10 campaign with an exhibition against DePauw Monday, Nov. 9, Butler tips off the regular season at Kentucky Sunday, Nov. 15. Three days later, the Bulldogs host IPFW in their home opener. After a trip to Saint Louis on Saturday Nov. 21, the Bulldogs will spend Thanksgiving in Mexico at the Cancun Thanksgiving Classic. The even in Cancun will have Butler playing 2009 WNIT qualifier Syracuse on Thanksgiving day and Northern Iowa Saturday, Nov. 28.
"We are excited and we feel fortunate to be able to compete at the Cancun Thanksgiving Tournament," head coach Beth Couture said. "It will be a great opportunity for our players and their parents to not only watch us play two quality teams in Syracuse and Northern Iowa, but also enjoy the holiday with each other."
Butler returns to the U.S. the first week of December for home contests against Evansville and Miami (Ohio). BU then plays road games at Indiana State (Dec. 9), Cincinnati (Dec. 13) and Dayton (Dec. 21) before closing the 2009 calendar year at home against Ball State Wednesday, Dec. 30.
"We have put together a very challenging non-league schedule, which will prepare us for another competitive season in the Horizon League," Couture said.
The Bulldogs, who finished second with a 14-4 record in the Horizon League last season, open league play with three home games beginning Saturday, Jan. 2 against Loyola. The first league road contest is against 2008 tournament champion Cleveland State Thursday, Jan. 14.
The regular season home finale is set for Saturday, Feb. 27 against defending Horizon League champion Green Bay. The final regular season contest is Saturday, March 6
Butler returns four starters and 10 letterwinners from last year's 20-12 team that finished second in the league and made it to the WNIT. Four of the Bulldogs' top five scorers return, including three players that averaged more than nine points per game.
