INDIANAPOLIS - Butler basketball fans can get their first look at the 2009-10 women's basketball team Monday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. when the Bulldogs host an exhibition game against DePauw. The Dogs are coming off back-to-back 20-win seasons and return four starters from last year's WNIT team.
BU (20-12, 14-4 HL in 08-09) ad vanced to the second round of the WNIT last season, making the postseason for the first time since 1998. The Bulldogs' 14 victories in Horizon League play tied the school record, set in 1993.
Head coach Beth Couture enters her 8th year at the helm of the Bulldogs. She has directed Butler to a winning record the past four seasons, and she is aiming for another successful season with a load of talented returning players.
Senior forward Susan Lester and junior guard Brittany Bowen were voted preseason All-Horizon League. Lester, who averaged 10.2 points and 6.0 rebounds a game last year, was a first-team honoree in the league's poll. Bowen, the team's leading scorer and 3-point shooter a year ago, was a second-team selection.
Butler also returns senior forward Melanie Thornton (9.6 ppg, 7.1 rpg), a Horizon League All-Defensive Team member last season, as well as junior point guard Terra Burns (5.9 ppg, 2.6 apg).
Butler opens the 2009-10 regular season at Kentucky Sunday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. The game can be found on FSN South and locally in Kentucky on BBSN.
NOTES: Coach Couture will join men's basketball head coach Brad Stevens as they preview the upcoming basketball season at Starbucks in Atherton Union Tuesday, Nov. 10. The coaches are speaking as part of the BUSF Spirit Week...BU has added freshmen Claire Freeman, Dragana Grbic, Becca Bornhorst and Elizabeth Jennings to the team this season...Butler and DePauw have met twice before, in 1979 and 1980. Butler won both meetings.
