INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Melanie Thornton, who was named Horizon League Player of the Year earlier this week, was selected as the league’s player of the week this week. It is the first time in her career she has won the award, and the first Bulldog to be honored this season.
Thornton, who was also named the league’s defensive player of the year, led Butler to a pair of road wins in Chicago last weekend. The 6-foot-1 senior scored 18 points with six rebounds and two steals in Butler’s 64-59 win at UIC on March 4. She followed that with a career-high 24 points on 10-for-13 shooting in a 73-46 rout at Loyola on March 6.
In addition to the 24 points at LU, Thornton had six rebounds and four steals while playing just 24 minutes. She had 18 points in the first half.
For the weekend, she averaged 21.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals while shooting 16-for-26 from the floor and 10-for-13 at the free throw line.
Thornton and the No. 2 seed Bulldogs (21-8) host Wright State Wednesday, March 10 in the quarterfinal of the Speedway Horizon League Women’s Basketball Championship. The game is at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the semifinals at the highest remaining seed, likely No. 1 Green Bay.
