Bulldogs Lose In Final Seconds At Evansville
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Bulldogs had several opportunities to tie the game or take the lead in the final seconds, but couldn't capitalize as the Butler women's basketball team lost at Evansville, 51-49, Tuesday afternoon. Senior Alyssa Pittman led Butler with 12 points.
With the Bulldogs trailing 50-49, UE's Staci Gillum split a pair of free throws to put Evansville ahead 51-49 with 20 seconds left to play. The Bulldogs came down the court and went to senior Brittany Bowen, the team's leading scorer, but Evansville's Taylor Ware blocked the shot and the Aces got the rebound. Evansville then threw a long outlet pass and ran out the clock.
Down 50-47 in the final minutes, Pittman scored to make it 50-49. Butler got a stop and called timeout, running a play for Bowen with 50 seconds left. The Bulldogs couldn't convert and fouled on the rebound. BU got another stop but dropped the ball in transition with 24.9 seconds to play. The next possession set up Gillum's free throws with 20 seconds remaining.
The contest was essentially a one-possession game for the entire 40 minutes. Butler's largest lead was 33-31 and UE never led by more than 5 during the second half. The Bulldogs controlled the boards 42-29 and hauled in 19 offensive rebounds. However, Butler was hurt by 5-for-11 free throw shooting.
Butler started slow but would take a 15-14 lead on a 3-pointer by Brierly. The two teams traded points throughout a first half that featured just seven fouls called between the two teams. Evansville led 27-24 at halftime.
Butler (4-4) will play at Ball State Sunday, Dec. 12 at 1 p.m.
