DAYTON, Ohio - When on a tough league road swing, a team needs its seniors. The seniors on the Butler women's basketball team carried the Bulldogs to a 70-58 win at Wright State Thursday night. Brittany Bowen led BU with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Chloe Hamilton added 19 points and eight boards. Alyssa Pittman added 13 points.
Hamilton led Butler with eight points in the first half and Bowen carried the scoring load with 14 second-half points. Pittman sank 4 of 8 3-pointers - a pair in each half.
"I'm really proud of our seniors. They carried us tonight," head coach Beth Couture said. "I was happy with the way they led both on and off the court."
Wright State's LaShawna Thomas and Molly Fox each scored 16 to lead the Raiders.
Butler led by as many as 14 points early in the second half and had a double-digit lead for most of the final period. Wright State hit a couple of 3-pointers to make a run 11-5 run over a 2:20 span to close within 43-38 with 10:35 to play. Moments later, Bowen answered with a 3-pointer to put Butler back up by 8.
With BU leading 48-42, Pittman drilled a pair of 3s over a :37 span. Bowen would add a 3-point play to make it 57-46. WSU (8-6) would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Butler (8-6, 2-0 HL) played with a lot of emotion and energy, taking command of the game on a snowy night in Dayton. That defensive intensity held Thomas to 6-for-20 shooting. Thomas came in averaging 18 points per game.
"We've had a couple of practices lately where we've challenged our girls to play hard," Couture said. "And they responded very well."
Butler controlled play in the first half, trailing only once early in the game. With the game tied at 16, sophomore Becca Bornhorst and Pittman buried a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions to give BU a 22-16 lead. Another Pittman trey with 2:21 left made it 25-20. Hamilton would score in the final minute to give the Bulldogs a 27-20 halftime lead.
Butler will continue its road swing at Detroit Saturday, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m. BU's next home is Thursday, Jan. 13 vs. Cleveland State.
