BU Pulls Away From Loyola, 64-60
CHICAGO - Senior Alyssa Pittman scored 19 points and senior Brittany Bowen added 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in the Butler women's basketball team's 64-60 win at Loyola Thursday night. A third senior, Chloe Hamilton, scored 16 points.
Fourteen of Pittman's 19 points came in the second half. She was 5 for 11 from the floor and made 7 of her 9 free throws. Three Pittman free throws in the final 30 seconds iced the game for Butler (12-6, 6-0), which remains undefeated in Horizon League play.
Loyola shot 49 percent from the floor for the game, but the Bulldogs' advantages in rebounding and free throws were the difference. Butler pounded the glass for a 39-29 advantage and also made 13 more free throws than the Ramblers. Of Bowen's 14 rebounds, eight were offensive.
With Butler up 61-58, LUC's Ellen Ayoub made a running lay-up with 32 seconds left. Loyola fouled, putting Pittman on the foul line. She split the pair to put BU ahead 62-60. The Bulldogs then got a stop and Loyola fouled Pittman again. She made both free throws to provide the final margin.
The Bulldogs, who trailed 29-27 at halftime, went on an 11-0 run midway through the second half to take a 42-34 lead with 12:23 remaining. The run came predominantly on free throws, as Butler was getting to the foul line but went nearly 5 minutes without a field goal. The Dawgs led 44-36 after a pair of free throws by Bowen before Loyola went on a 14-4 run.
Loyola was led by Monica Albano with 14 points. Ayoub added 13.
Butler will continue in Chicago this weekend with a Saturday afternoon game at UIC. Tip time is 4 p.m. ET (3 p.m. CT).
