Bowen Scores 31, But CSU Prevails In Final Minute

CLEVELAND - Senior Brittany Bowen led Butler with 31 points and 11 rebounds but the BU women's basketball team lost in the last minute, 69-64, Saturday evening at the Wolstein Center. The loss moves the Bulldogs into a tie for second place with Wright State.

Brierly shot 9 for 19 from the floor and sank four 3-pointers. Junior Devin Brierly added 16 points, highlighted by 4-of-7 3-point shooting.

BU (15-10, 9-4) trailed for most of the second half before making a run. A runner in the lane by senior Alyssa Pittman with 1:01 left gave Butler a 64-63 lead, its first advantage since the 14:42 mark. CSU's Janelle Adams answered with a 3-point play to put the Vikings ahead 66-64.

After a timeout, Pittman fired a 3-pointer that led to a long rebound on the floor. Senior Azjah Bass dove for the ball and was tied up by CSU's Shawnita Garland. Cleveland State had the possession arrow. Winton made one of two free throws on the other end to give the Vikings a 67-64 lead.

The Bulldogs ran a play for Bowen, whose 3 from deep was too strong. Butler had to foul on the other end, and Destinee Blue made two free throws to ice the game.

Cleveland State (14-10, 7-6) was led by Winton with 20 points. Blue added 13 points and 11 rebounds. The two Viking post players helped CSU to a 30-16 edge in points in the paint.

The Bulldogs made 10 3-pointers, but had to attempt 30 to get there. BU finished with 31.1 percent shooting.

Down 6-0 to start the game, Butler went on a 9-6 run and later would lead 16-15 on a pair of Brierly free throws. Cleveland State went on a 12-2 run to go up 27-18 before gaining a 32-29 lead at halftime.

The Bulldogs will host the two Chicago schools next week at Hinkle Fieldhouse. UIC comes to Indy Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. Butler's Senior Day is two days later vs. Loyola.
