IOWA CITY, Iowa - Senior Terra Burns had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the Butler women's basketball team to its first victory of the season, a 69-68 win over Harvard at the Hawkeye Challenge. Freshman Haley Howard added 15 points for the Bulldogs, who finished the season-opening weekend at Iowa 1-1.
The Bulldogs led 69-60 when Burns scored with 2:30 remaining. Butler did not score again, but held on for the victory. Harvard scored eight points over a 2:02 span to cut it to 69-68. Butler then missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 12 seconds left. Harvard had a chance to win the game, but sophomore Jenna Cobb came up with a steal on the game's final possession.
"We were disappointed in our effort on Saturday. We didn't play like Butler," head coach Beth Couture said. "Today we played hard on every possession and it showed. Our young kids really grew up today."
Howard's 15 points came on 5-for-5 shooting and 4-for-4 at the foul line. Burns shot 6-of-10 from the floor and made two 3-pointers. All nine of her boards were defensive.
Brogan Berry led Harvard with 18 points. Christine Clark added 17.
"We played really good defense in the first half," Couture said. "Our man-to-man defense looked really good and we finished plays with good box-outs."
The Dawgs shot 52 percent in the first half and took a 42-36 lead into halftime. HU scored the first six points of the second half to tie the game 42-42, but the Bulldogs never trailed. Butler went on a 10-2 run to lead 52-44 with 13:45 to go.
Four minutes later, Harvard pulled to within 58-56 but a Burns 3 and lay-ups by freshmen Hannah Douglas and Amanda Raker put Butler ahead 65-56. The Bulldogs held a solid lead until Harvard's comeback fell short in the final minute.
Butler will be off this week and will play at IPFW Sunday, Nov. 20. BU's home opener is Wednesday, Nov. 30.
