Butler vs. St. Francis (Exh.)
Sunday, Oct. 30 - 2 p.m. ET
Hinkle Fieldhouse - Indianapolis, Ind.
After four straight 20-win seasons and three straight WNIT appearances, the Butler women's basketball team begins its season with an exhibition game Sunday, Oct. 30 against St. Francis University. The tip for Sunday's exhibition is 2 p.m. ET.
Butler returns seven letterwinners from last year's 20-14 squad that made the WNIT. The Bulldogs also added four highly-regarded freshmen this year. Additionally, Butler will be boosted by the return of fifth-year point guard Terra Burns. The veteran point guard was injured six games into the season last year and took a medical redshirt. She averaged 8.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game before sitting out the rest of the season.
Senior Devin Brierly started 30 games a year ago and played 26.3 minutes per game. Brierly has been a devensive standout and may be counted on to score more this season. Junior forward Becca Bornhorst started 14 times a year ago and is also an experienced player. Sophomore guards Jenna Cobb and Mandy McDivitt also return, as well as veteran players Elizabeth Jennings and Kaley May.
St. Francis, an NAIA school located in Fort Wayne, Ind., went 25-9 last year. The Cougars play in the Mid-Central College Conference, which includes Indianapolis-based Marian University.
Beth Couture, in her 10th season at Butler, has led the Bulldogs to second place in the Horizon League in each of the last three seasons. The all-time wins leader for Butler women's basketball, Couture is 43-24 over the past two years.
The Butler women's basketball program will also be hosting an alumni game Sunday at noon before the game against St. Francis. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the court will be available for warm-ups at 11:30. There will be a reception with food and drinks in the Wildman Room for alumni after the game.
Butler will open its regular season Saturday, Nov. 12 against UNLV at Iowa. Butler's second game will be either against Iowa or Harvard. The Bulldogs' home opener is Wednesday, Nov. 30 vs. Bradley.
