INDIANAPOLIS - A 19-point, 10-rebound effort from junior forward Daress McClung was not enough to lead Butler past Fairfield in the Bulldogs' home opener Saturday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Stags hit nine 3-pointers en route to a 54-45 win.
McClung recorded her second double-double of the season, while sophomore guard Taylor Schippers added 16 points, but the Bulldogs (1-2) were unable to contain the Stags (2-1) in the second half.
Fairfield outscored the Bulldogs 35-24 in the second half, while shooting 46 percent from the field.
Senior guard Katelyn Linney paced the Stags with 17 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arc.
Butler battled neck-and-neck with Fairfield throughout the first half, entering the locker room facing a narrow 21-19 deficit.
A Taylor Schippers jumper gave the Bulldogs a 33-28 lead with 11:54 remaining in the second half.
A pair of 3-pointers from juniors Katie Cizynski and Alexys Vazquez sparked an 11-2 run for the Stags, and Fairfield never looked back, leading the remainder of the game.
Sophomore guard Hannah Douglas added six points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Butler will look to rebound from the loss when it hosts in-state rival Valparaiso Monday at 7 p.m. inside Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The Crusaders beat the Bulldogs twice last season and picked up a 64-52 win over Indiana earlier this month.
