IPFW Holds Off Bulldogs In Non-Conference Battle, 82-75
Jan. 20, 2007
Fort Wayne, Ind. - Freshman Susan Lester tallied her second double-double of her career and senior Jackie Closser tied her season-high point total, but the Bulldogs were unable to quell a strong offensive output by IPFW as the Mastodons topped Butler, 82-75, at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center on Saturday (Jan. 20).
The Bulldogs played comeback for the second-straight contest, rallying from an eight-point second-half deficit to take a two-point advantage with four minutes left in regulation, but IPFW's Ashley Johnson and Johnna Lewis-Carlisle carried the Mastodons down the stretch to secure the win.
The two teams traded the lead 10 times in the first half. The Bulldogs built up a five-point lead with four minutes remaining in the period after Lester converted a pair of free throws to make the score 29-24. Sophomore Lade Akande aided the cause, hitting three field goals and a pair of makes from the free-throw line to finish with eight points in the half.
IPFW battled back to tie the game with under a minute left before Lewis-Carlisle hit a three-pointer with five seconds on the clock to give the Mastodons a 35-33 lead at the break.
IPFW jumped out to an eight-point advantage to start the second period, but the Bulldogs fought back to tie the game at 45-45 four minutes later. The Mastodons pushed ahead once more, building back their eight-point differential with under 10 minutes remaining at 57-49, but Butler refused to quit, regaining the advantage at 60-59 on a three-pointer by Tara Miller with less than seven minutes to go.
Butler was unable to contain Johnson and Lewis-Carlisle down the stretch, however, as the tandem combined to score 19 of the team's 21 points in the final five minutes, including a 9-of-10 trek from the line by Johnson.
Lester finished with 21 points 5-of-10 shooting from the field, including three treys, and an 8-for-8 clip from the line. She also added a game-high 11 rebounds, notching her second double-double of her brief career.
Closser finished with 19 points, going 7-of-16 from the field with three three-pointers, while Akande and Cassie Freeman each posted nine points.
Johnson finished with a game-high 31 points on 9-of-13 shooting and four threes, while Lewis-Carlisle added 19 points.
The Bulldogs return to Horizon League action on Thursday (Jan. 24) when they host league-leading UW-Green Bay beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldbouse.
