Indianapolis, Ind. - After putting up a staggering offensive performance en route to a career-best point total, Butler junior forward Susan Lester was named the Horizon League's Player of the Week. The league office made the announcement on Monday (Jan. 26).
Lester put together arguably the most impressive offensive display of the Horizon League season against Valparaiso on Friday (Jan. 23), hitting 11-of-19 from the field and 5-of-8 from beyond the arc to finish with a career-best 31 points in leading the Bulldogs to a convincing 77-44 victory.
"We're really excited for Susan," head coach Beth Couture said. "She had struggled a little on the offensive end this year but had still found ways to contribute to our success. It was great for her to have such a big offensive game, because it could really give her a boost of confidence heading into a tough stretch in our league schedule."
Despite playing just 24 minutes the entire game, Lester came off the bench to score a whopping 27 of her points in 14 first-half minutes alone, including 23 of Butler's final 30 and 16 of its last 18 of the half. Her first-half totals (27 points, 10-14 FG, 4-6 3FG) easily topped the entire Valpo roster's figures (19 points, 5-19 FG, 1-4 3FG).
Her 31 points finished just six shy of the Butler school record and was the school's highest single-game point total since Sarah Bolten matched the Bulldog record with 37 against Bowling Green on Dec. 4, 2001.
The Anderson, Ind., native also finished second in the game with six rebounds.
Lester is the second Butler player to be honored with the league's weekly award. Senior center Lade Akande received recognition on Dec. 8.
Butler tries to continue its perfect start to the Horizon League season on Thursday (Jan. 29) when it takes on reigning league regular season champion Green Bay beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET.
