Indianapolis, Ind. - After supplying a huge boost in a pair of dominant wins for the Bulldogs last week, senior center Lade Akande was named the Horizon League's Women's Basketball Player of the Week. The league office made the announcement on Monday (Dec. 8).
Akande provided a big lift on both the offensive and defensive ends in Butler's two victories, averaging a team-high 15.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while posting two double-doubles.
She notched her first double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 rebounds at Evansville on Wednesday (Dec. 3) in helping the Bulldogs to a convincing 70-52 win over the Purple Aces. Three days later (Dec. 6), she went for a season-high 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting and chipped in a game-high 10 boards while leading Butler to a blow-out 78-48 victory over Coastal Carolina.
"We're really proud of the way Lade has played lately," head coach Beth Couture said. "She has stepped up her level of intensity and effort on the floor, which has been a huge help to our success both at home and on the road in the last week."
Akande's output during the week pushed her career scoring total to 1,452 points and moved her into fourth on the Bulldogs' all-time scoring list, passing Barb Skinner's fourth-place total (1,448) against the Chanticleers.
She is the first Butler player to be recognized by the league with its weekly award.
Butler returns to action on Tuesday (Dec. 9) when it takes on Indiana beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Assembly Hall. The game will feature live streaming video on BigTenNetwork.com.
