Butler freshman Lade Akande led the Bulldogs to a pair of come-from-behind last week, earning Horizon League "Player of the Week" honors for her efforts, the league office announced Tuesday (Dec. 27). Akande averaged 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds as the Bulldogs downed Evansville and UMBC at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The 6-1 post player is the second Bulldog to be honored by the Horizon League already this season, joining junior Jackie Closser from Dec. 5.
Akande registered the third double-double of her young career with a team-high 21 points and 12 rebounds against Evansville Dec. 19. The 12 boards matched-her career-high, while she also posted personal-bests of six blocks and 38 minutes. Butler overcame an eight-point deficit with less than four minutes remaining to post an 83-78 win over the Purple Aces.
Down 17 points early in the second half Thursday against UMBC, Akande helped to spark the Bulldogs to a 72-66 win over the visiting Retrievers. Akande hit five of nine attempts from the field for 12 points, pulled down seven rebounds and added three steals.
The freshman is tied for the League-lead in rebounding (8.0), while ranking second in blocks per game (1.9) and 13th in scoring (12.0).
Butler returns to action Thursday (Dec. 29) against Youngstown State at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The game serves as the Horizon League opener for both teams. Free video and audio of the 7 p.m. tip is available live at www.butlersports.com.
