Rain Shortens Butler Spring Invitational
AVON, IND. -- Heavy storms that passed through Indiana on Thursday (April 18) forced the cancellation of the final round of the 2013 Butler Spring Invitational at Prestwick Country Club. IUPUI claimed the women's trophy, while Green Bay was awarded the men's championship.
Teams were able to complete Thursday's round, despite intermittent rain. But heavy rains overnight made the course un-playable for the final round.
IUPUI, behind individual leader Lauren Kuss, grabbed a 320-323 lead over the Bulldogs on Thursday. Kuss shot an even-par 72 to take a six-stroke lead in the individual competition and earn medalist honors. Butler's duo of Jenna Peters and Isabella Lambert, playing as a non-scoring individual, tied for second with rounds of 78.
Ali Arends came in fourth overall with an 80, while Ali Restaino finished sixth with an 82. Julie Porter tied for seventh after carding an 83 and Nicole Johnson came in 11th with a 91. Amy Lundstram, playing as a non-scoring individual, finished 12th with a 97.
In the men's competition, Green Bay, led by individual winner Tom Boockmeier, finished the first round with a team score of 296. IUPUI was ten strokes back with a 306, while the Bulldogs posted a 309. Boockmeier carded a one-under-par 71, the lone player to finish under par.
Colin Reenan and Corbin Sellers, playing as a non-scoring individual, topped Butler and tied for third overall with rounds of 74. Andrew Wegeng and Andrew Eiler, also playing as a non-scoring individual, were among four players tied for eighth place with rounds of 76.
Matt Vitale tied for 15th with a score of 79, while Logan Holt tied for 17th with a round of 80. Brigham Stewart rounded out Butler's scoring team and tied for 19th overall with an 81, while Clark Etheridge, playing as a non-scoring individual, came in 20th with an 83.
The Butler Spring Invitational was the final competition for the Bulldogs prior to the conference tournaments, April 26-28. Butler's men will participate in the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Golf Championship in Coral Springs, Fla., while Butler's women will compete at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship in Orlando, Fla.
