Bulldogs Place Fifth At Benbow Invitational
JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FLA. -- Junior Jenna Peters captured a "Top Five" individual finish and helped lead Butler to fifth place in the 11-team field at the Benbow Invitational, which wrapped up at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club on Tuesday, March 11. It was Butler's first competition of 2014.
Peters shot a team-best 80 in the opening round on Monday (March 10) and then finished with a team-leading 79 in the final round. Here 36-hole score of 159 earned her a tie for fifth place with Shelly Ford of Cleveland State. Ana Fernandez de Mes of IUPUI captured medalist honors with a two-round score of 149.
Senior Ali Restaino and freshman Megan McCambridge tied for second among the Bulldogs with final scores of 169. Restaino opened with an 85 and then shot an 84 in the final round, while McCambridge shot an 86 on the first day and then closed with an 83. Junior Isabella Lambert finished one stroke back at 170 with rounds of 88 and 82 to complete Butler's scoring unit.
Sophomore Nicole Johnson, Butler's fifth golfer, carded rounds of 89 and 88 for a 36-hole score of 177.
Newberry finished with a team score of 649 to edge Cleveland State by a single stroke for the title. Alabama State came in third with a 655, followed by IUPUI (659), Butler (667), Valparaiso (672), Western Illinois (677), Central Connecticut State (690), Evansville (712), Eastern Illinois (714) and Savannah State (772).
The Bulldogs will remain in Florida and will host the Bulldog Florida Invitational at Windsor Parke Golf Club on Wednesday and Thursday, March 12-13.
