Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Hopkins was named Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week after posting two shutouts in goal for the Bulldogs. It is the first career honor for Hopkins, and the first A-10 honor for a Butler student-athlete.
Hopkins, from Lake Oswego, Ore., posted 200 minutes of shutout soccer last week as BU went 1-0-1. In a 1-0 win at Purdue, she made five saves to help Butler to its first ever win over the Boilermakers. It was also BU's first victory over a Big Ten opponent since it beat Indiana in 2008.
The freshman then made five saves in a 0-0 tie at home against UT-Martin. The Skyhawks attempted 17 shots on the day, but none got past Hopkins. It was her fourth shutout and she saw her record in goal move to 3-1-1.
For the season, Hopkins owns a league-leading 0.19 goals against average. She also leads the A-10 with a .933 saves percentage. Butler has allowed just three goals this season, the lowest number in the conference.
Butler (3-2-1) plays once this week, traveling to Michigan Friday, Sept. 7.
