NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Sophia Maccagnone, who scored three goals over the weekend, has been named Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week. It is the first career award for Maccagnone, a freshman from Shelby Township, Mich.
"It is great for Sophia to be recognized," head coach Tari St. John said. "We haven't even scratched the surface with her potential. She has a great work ethic and is good on both sides of the ball. You can see the stats on offense, but she also does a lot for us on defense."
Maccagnone, Butler's leading scorer, found the back of the net three times in leading BU to a pair of wins over the weekend. Maccagnone scored twice in the second half of Butler's 3-0 win over Eastern Illinois at home on Friday night. On Sunday, with BU trailing on the road at Ball State, she scored in the 45th minute to help Butler to a 2-1 comeback win.
For the week, Maccagnone totaled six points on three goals and 12 shots (seven on goal). She has scored half of Butler's 10 goals this season and leads the team with 34 shots. She currently ranks fourth in the A-10 in both shots and goals.
Maccagnone's performances over the weekend were also recognized by the website College Sports Madness.
Butler (5-3-1) has one reamining non-conference match before A-10 play begins. BU will host Youngstown State Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Butler Bowl at 5:30 p.m.
