Mahoney, a defender from Buffalo Grove, Ill., was named A-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week and Maccagnone was the league's rookie of the week. It marked the third time this year that the Shelby Township, Mich., native captured the award.
It was a good weekend of soccer for Butler and having these two recognized really caps it off," head coach Tari St. John said. "Not only did Kelly help anchor a defense that earned its 6th shutout of the year, but she also came up with two timely goals on the weekend.
"Sophie is such a competitor and is always looking to be the difference on the field. I couldn't be happier for these two. They are great representations of Butler soccer."
With Butler down 1-0, Mahoney scored at the 12:02 against Dayton on Friday night. The goal was her second of the season and helped BU to a 3-2 overtime win over the Flyers. Mahoney then found the net in the 98th minute to give the Bulldogs to a 1-0 OT win over Xavier.
Mahoney was also honored as player of the week by College Sports Madness.
Maccagnone, who ranks third in the A-10 with eight goals, had three points in BU's win over UD. Shescored on a free kick at 39:03 and assisted on the game-winner by Elise Kotsakis in overtime against the Flyers. For the week, the freshman midfielder totaled 11 shots (8 on goal) and the three points. She attempted seven shots (6 on goal) against the Musketeers.
The two wins lifted the Bulldogs to 8-3-2 on the season and 2-0-1 in Atlantic 10 play. BU is 5-0-1 in its last six matches and is unbeaten at home over the last eight contests at the Butler Bowl.
The Bulldogs are on the road this weekend, taking on Richmond and VCU, both located in Richmond, Va.
