The Butler women’s soccer team will wrap up regular season play on the road this weekend when it visits George Washington Friday and Charlotte Sunday. The Bulldogs currently sit in fifth place in the Atlantic-10, one point behind Charlotte.
Butler will rely on leading goal scorer Sophia Maccagnone to get the offensive unit rolling on unfamiliar turf. The Bulldogs are 2-3-1 on the road this season.
Butler (9-4-4, 3-1-3) is a perfect 7-0 when Maccagnone scores at least one goal. The freshman has taken 86 shots on the year, second most in school history for a single season.
Maccagnone leads the team with 10 goals and was responsible for both of the squad’s scores in Butler’s 2-1 win over Temple on Friday, Oct. 19.
The Bulldogs will also lean on its defensive unit this weekend to keep its opponents at bay. Butler is 9-2-3 this season when giving up one or fewer goals.
The George Washington Colonials (4-11-1, 0-7-0) will enter Friday’s contest on a seven-match losing streak. They are led by senior forward Adriana Moya and freshman forward Kristi Abbate, who each have three goals on the year.
Sunday’s match against the Charlotte 49ers (10-5-2, 4-2-1) holds serious implications regarding conference standings. The fourth-place 49ers (13 points) are one point ahead of Butler (12 points) in the league standings.
Charlotte is led by sophomore midfielder Amanda Jones and senior defender Carrie Dail, who have scored seven and six goals, respectively.
The match will be Senior Day for the 49ers.
