Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Sophia Maccagnone and the Butler Bulldogs will look to continue their historic season when they face off against St. Bonaventure Thursday in the semifinal round of the 2012 A-10 Women's Soccer Championship in Kingston, R.I.
Fourth-seeded Butler is enjoying its winningest campaign since 2002 when the squad recorded a record of 15-6, 5-1. The Bulldogs (11-4-4, 5-1-3) have already clinched the school record for fewest losses in a single season and have lost just once since Sept. 7.
Led by a stalwart defensive unit, the Bulldogs lead the A-10 in goals against average (0.69) and shutouts (10). This year's squad has allowed just 14 goals, the fewest in team history (20 in 1997).
Offensively, the Bulldogs are paced by Maccagnone, the team's first conference rookie/newcomer of the year since Kate Lord in 2002. Maccagnone's 11 goals are the most by a freshman in school history, tying Joy Aschenbrener's mark set in 1995.
Thursday's meeting will be the first match-up between Butler and St. Bonaventure.
The fifth-seeded Bonnies (8-10-1, 5-4-0) will enter the contest riding a three-match win streak.
St. Bonaventure is led by sophomore midfielder Brittany Charles, who has scored two goals and dished out eight assists on the year.
Senior defender Shannon Van Riper and sophomore forward Molly Curry lead the Bonnies offense, scoring five and four goals, respectively.
The winner of Thursday's match will play the winner of the No. 1 LaSalle - No. 8 Charlotte contest.
