OMAHA, Neb. – The Butler women's soccer team recorded another overtime victory as the team came up with a 1-0 win at Creighton on Saturday night. Katie Griswold scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute off an assist from Kelly Mahoney.
"At this point of the season it's about winning and picking up as many points as you can," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John stated. "We played well and dominated most of the game, but, above all, there was a will to win. I am extremely proud of and am so happy to be a part of this team."
With the win, Butler improves their overall record to 11-5-2 with a 4-4 mark in the BIG EAST. Creighton falls to 9-7-1 with a 2-5-1 record in conference action.
Butler out shot Creighton 8-0 in the first half, but the two teams entered halftime tied at 0-0. The second half shot count evened out yet Butler ended the game with a 17-5 advantage. Danielle Rice made eight saves for Creighton and Julie Burton made one stop for Butler.
"Creighton is very organized; that is something we will always have to be prepared for with Bruce's teams," St. John added. "It took us until the 95th minute to find a way to break them down."
The game-winning goal was a cross pass from Mahoney to Griswold. The senior found the back of the net from 18 yards. It was her second goal of the season.
"Kelly's entry ball into Grizz for the goal was top class," St. John explained. "Grizz did well to beat and hold off the defender and her finish was highlight material."
Butler will end the regular season with a road match at Marquette on Nov. 2. The BIG EAST tournament will begin with the quarterfinals on Nov. 5.
"Marquette has proven themselves to be the best team in the conference," St. John said. "We are excited about the opportunity to play yet another nationally ranked team next week."
