Bulldogs Place Two on NSCAA All-Northeast Region Team

KANSAS CITYSophia Maccagnone and Serina Kashimoto were recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for their outstanding level of play during the 2013 season. Each player was honored as an All-Northeast Region selection with Maccagnone earning First Team honors for the second year in a row, and Kashimoto taking home Second Team accolades.

Maccagnone continues to pile up postseason awards during her young career as the First Team All-BIG EAST honoree is now officially a First Team All-Region selection. She earned the award in the Mid-Atlantic Region last year when Butler played in the Atlantic 10. This year she belongs in the All-Northeast Region with teams such as Louisville, UCF, Fairfield, and Saint Francis. Georgetown, Marquette and St. John's also represent the BIG EAST conference in the All-Northeast Region with first team selections.

Maccagnone once again led the team in multiple statistical categories, helping the team post an overall record of 11-7-2. The midfielder started in all 20 matches and led the team in points for the second straight year with 28. She scored 10 goals and added eight assists to reach 28 points. Her 88 shots on the year also landed her in third all-time in school history for most shots taken in a single-season.

Maccagnone was a force for Butler offensively, but the defensively it was freshman Serina Kashimoto who impacted the action. Kashimoto was the only freshman selected to either the first or second all-region team. She was an instrumental part of the Bulldog defense that posted seven shutouts during the season.

The defensive minded Kashimoto made two assists on the year for Butler recording a helper in back-to-back games against Indiana State and Northern Kentucky. She helped the Bulldogs keep opponents off the scoreboard which led Butler to a BIG EAST record of 4-5, making them the fifth seed in the BIG EAST Tournament.

Five other players from the BIG EAST conference made the second team along with Kashimoto and three BIG EAST players earned third team honors. For the complete list of this year's NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women's All-Northeast Region Teams click here.
