Butler Wins Horizon League Opener In 11 Innings
Freshman Jenny Esparza struck out 22 batters and senior Bridget Paine drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th inning to lead Butler to a 4-1 victory over No. 3-seeded UIC in the first round of the 2010 Horizon League Softball Championship at Viking Field on Thursday, May 13. The win sends the sixth-seeded Bulldogs into a 4:30 p.m (ET) game against No. 2 seed Wright State.

Butler Drops Final Game At Cleveland State
Cleveland State scored two runs without the benefit of a hit and held on to defeat visiting Butler, 2-1, in the final game of a three-game Horizon League series on Sunday. It was Butler’s second one-run loss in two days to the first place Vikings.

Bridget Paine Ties Home Run Record In Butler Win
Senior shortstop Bridget Paine slugged her school-record 11th home run of the season and Butler held on to post a 5-4 victory over visiting Wright State in the final game of a three-game Horizon League series at the Butler Softball Field on Wednesday, April 21. The win lifted the Bulldogs to 35-11 on the season and 11-5 in league play.

Bulldogs Held in Check by Cox and the Raiders
Indianapolis, Ind.-The Bulldogs dropped a pair of league games to visiting Wright State (18-22) on Apr. 20 at the Butler Softball Field. The first game went nine innings, but the Bulldogs came up on the short end of the stick, 2-1. In the second game of the day, Butler fell behind early and eventually fell to the Raiders, 6-3. The Bulldogs fall to 34-11 overall and 10-5 in the Horizon League.

Freshman Jenny Esparza, who broke Butler’s single season record for victories with two wins last week, has been named Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for the period ending April 18. It’s the third time this season that she’s been honored with the League’s weekly award.

Seniors Lead Bulldogs to Sweep of Detroit, 6-4
On Senior Day, Butler seniors Annie Dolan and Bridget Paine scored the final two runs of the game to give the Bulldogs their 34th win of the year with a 6-4 victory over Detroit on Apr. 18 at the Butler Softball Field. Senior Kristin Malinkey started the game for the Bulldogs and allowed only one earned run in 3.2 innings of work. Dolan had a game-high three hits.

Bulldogs Dominate Titans, 8-0 and 9-1
The Bulldogs (33-9) took both games in five innings on the first day of Senior Weekend against Detroit (2-27) on Saturday Apr. 17 at the Butler Softball Field. Butler pitchers allowed only two hits on the day while Butler hitters amassed 11 hits in each game. Freshman Meaghan Sullivan led the charge offensively with three doubles on the day.

Butler freshman Meaghan Sullivan, who helped lead the Bulldogs to a 5-2 week, has been named Horizon League Softball Player of the Week for the week ending April 4. She’s the first Butler position player to be honored this spring.

Senior Bridget Paine drove in three runs and junior Jennifer Chasteen turned in a complete-game pitching performance to lead Butler to a 7-1 victory over UIC in the first game of a Horizon League doubleheader at the Butler Softball Field on Saturday (April 10). The visiting Flames took the nightcap, 5-0. The two teams will play again on Sunday at 12 noon.

Butler used two complete-game pitching performances and a pair of game-winning home runs to sweep two games from visiting Eastern Illinois in a non-league doubleheader at the Butler Softball Field on Thursday (April 8). The Bulldogs, continuing a record-setting season, won the opener, 5-2, and then captured the nightcap, 4-0.

Bulldogs Make History, Split with Valpo
Valparaiso, Ind.- The Butler softball team (27-8) became the first team in school history to win 27 games in a season when they split a pair of games with league leading Valparaiso on Tuesday Apr. 3 at the V.U. Softball Field. Valparaiso (24-8) took the first of two games 3-0. Butler bounced back in the second game behind freshman Devin Dearing and red-shirt freshman Kayla Gray to win their own 3-0 game.

Softball Falls to Youngstown State, 4-2
The Bulldogs (26-7) fell to the Penguins of Youngstown State (7-19) 4-2 Sunday afternoon at McCune Park in Canton, Ohio. Youngstown State got out to an early 4-0 lead then Butler scored a run in both the sixth and seventh inning before running out of outs. The Bulldogs took the weekend series 2-1.

Softball Ties the School Record for Wins with Two over YSU
The Butler softball team (26-6) tied the school record of 26 win in a season with two against Youngstown State Saturday Apr. 3 at McCune Park. The Bulldogs took the first game 6-0 behind great pitching and an explosive sixth inning offensively and the pitching and hitting continued in the second game as the Bulldogs scored early and often to win in five innings 9-0.

Late Rally Comes Up Short Against #21 Ohio State, 7-5
The Bulldogs rallied to score five runs in the top of the sixth inning but eventually fell to #21 Ohio State (22-10) 7-5 Friday Apr. 2 at Buckeye Field. The Bulldogs were held scoreless in every inning except for the sixth. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 24-6 on the year.

Softball Splits Twinbill at Purdue
The Bulldogs moved to 24-5 after splitting two games against Purdue (15-19) on Apr. 1 at the Purdue Varsity Softball Complex. The Bulldogs managed only one hit in the first of two games and lost by a score of 1-0. The Dawgs rebounded in the second game behind pitcher Breanna Fisher who allowed only two hits to earn a 3-0 victory.

Bulldogs Grab Two Victories At Indiana State
Indianapolis, Ind.-The Butler Softball team moved to 21-4 after defeating Indiana State (11-10) twice on Mar. 24 at Price Field in Terre Haute, Ind. The Bulldogs' bats were electric in the first of two games as they scored 14 runs on 13 hits to beat Indiana State 14-7. In the second game runs were harder to come by for the Bulldogs, but the three runs they managed were more than enough support for Jenny Esparza who shut the Sycamores out for a 3-0 victory.

Dawgs Take Two From Crosstown Rival IUPUI
The Bulldogs move to 19-4 on the season after sweeping a two game set against cross-town rival IUPUI (4-16) at the IUPUI Softball Complex on Mar. 23. Butler took the first of two games 5-2 and went on to win the second game of the double-header 7-1. Jenny Esparza and Breanna Fisher held the IUPUI hitters in check while the Butler lineup took care of the rest.

Softball Wins Three of Four on Ohio Road Trip
The Bulldogs (17-4) won three of four games against the University of Dayton and Ohio University during a road trip March 19-20. Pitching and great hitting were the keys to two run rule victories at Dayton. The Bulldogs continued to get outstanding pitching at Ohio University and were able to earn a spilt of the two games.

Bulldogs Split Home Opener Against Morehead
The Butler Softball team (14-3) split two games with Morehead State (7-10) on Tuesday March 16 at the Butler Softball Field. The Bulldogs won the first of two games in extra innings when Annie Dolan had a walk off hit in the bottom of the ninth. The Bulldogs were unable to complete the two game sweep losing 5-1 in the second game.

The Bulldogs are on a nine game winning streak after winning seven games at the Rebel Games in Florida. Butler has hit nine homeruns in the seven games in Florida. Senior Bridget Paine has a hit in every game of the win streak. Paine has hit four homeruns and knocked in 17 runs on the year.

Butler Wins Final Game At APSU Classic
Sophomore Jessica Huey scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning and freshman Jenny Esparza blanked the home team in the bottom of the final frame to lift Butler to a 4-3 victory over Tennessee State in the final game of the Austin Peay Classic on Sunday, Feb. 21. The win gave the Bulldogs a 3-2 record in the tournament.

Jennifer Chasteen pitched five shutout innings and Butler held off a late rally to hand host Austin Peay a 3-2 setback on the second day of the Play It Again Sports/Austin Peay Classic in Clarksville, Tenn., on Saturday (Feb. 20). Earlier in the day, the Bulldogs dropped a 2-0 decision to Chattanooga.

Butler Picked Fourth In Horizon League Softball Poll
Butler, coming off a strong finish last season, has been picked to finish fourth in the 2010 Horizon League softball race, according to the annual preseason poll of league coaches. Last year’s tournament champion. Cleveland State, was tabbed as the favorite, while 2009 regular season champ UIC was picked second in the poll released by the Horizon League office.

Stefanie Ewing Named Assistant Softball Coach At Butler
Stefanie Ewing, who saw action in more than 200 games as a catcher/designated player at Oregon State University, has been named assistant softball coach at Butler University. She completed her collegiate playing career last spring.

Butler Adds Two Softball Players For 2009-10
Butler head coach Jeanne Rayman increased the strength and depth of her 2009-10 softball roster with the addition of infielder/outfielder Jessica Huey, a transfer from IUPUI, and preferred walk-on Emily Schrock. The two newcomers give the Bulldogs 21 players for the upcoming season.

Butler recruit Jenny Esparza has added to an already impressive resume with a pair of prestigious honors, including Indiana’s top softball award. The incoming freshman capped off a brilliant senior season at Avon High School by being named the Indianapolis Star Super Team Player of the Year and by being selected as the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association 2009 Miss Softball.
