Butler Tabbed Seventh In A-10 Softball Poll

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Butler will be chasing the favorites in this year's Atlantic 10 Conference softball race, according to the preseason poll of the league's 12 head coaches.  The Bulldogs were tabbed seventh in the poll, released by the A-10 office on Tuesday (Jan. 22).

Defending A-10 champion Massachusetts topped the poll.  The Minutewomen finished the 2012 season with a 38-13 overall record and a perfect 19-0 conference mark.  The softball powerhouse captured its 17th A-10 title in the past 20 years!

Fordham was picked second in the coaches' poll, followed by George Washington, Saint Joseph's, Temple, Charlotte, Butler, Saint Louis, Dayton, St. Bonaventure, Rhode Island and La Salle.

Butler, heading into its first A-10 softball race, returns 12 letterwinners from last year's 25-32 squad, which placed fifth in the in the Horizon League.  Among the Bulldogs' returnees are leading hitters Meaghan Sullivan (.345) and Kristin Boros (.324).  Butler head coach Scott Hall also will look to the return of standout pitcher Jenny Esparza, who missed most of last season with injury.  Esparza had a Butler record 18 wins in both 2010 and 2011.

The 2013 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship, hosted by the Massachusetts, will be held on May 8-11 at the UMass Softball Complex in Amherst, Mass.
