Bulldogs Fall Twice At SIU Coach B Classic

Head Coach Scott Hall

CARBONDALE, ILL. -- Butler managed just seven hits on the day and wound up dropping two games in the weather-shortened Coach B Classic, hosted by Southern Illinois University of Sunday, March 3.  Northern Illinois edged the Bulldogs, 3-2, in the opener, before Butler fell to host SIU, 9-0, in the nightcap.

Shelby Miller slugged a two-run, home run in the top of the fourth inning in the opener to break a 1-1 tie and lift Northern Illinois to the victory.  Miller also drove in the Huskies' first run with a single in the first inning.

Butler (2-9) tied the game at 1-1 on a run-scoring single by Maria Leichty in the third inning.  The Bulldogs also tallied an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Krista Hakola, running for Carrie Tveita, scored on a passed ball.

Freshman Kristin Gutierrez turned in a solid performance on the mound for the Bulldogs.  She struck out two, walked three and allowed just three runs in her first collegiate complete game effort.  Senior Meaghan Sullivan led Butler's offensive attack with two hits in four trips to the plate.

In the second game, host Southern Illinois jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning.  Highlighting the home team's rally was a grand slam home run by Meredith Wilson.  The Salukis added a single run in the second inning and then ended the game in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run, home run by Michelle Bradley.

Sullivan and freshman Alex Kotter had Butler's lone hits off of SIU starter Brittney Lang.

The tournament, originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday (March 2-3), was reduced to one day because of winter weather in the Carbondale area.

The Bulldogs will take a brief break before heading to Florida for eight games at the Rebel Games, March 10-15.
