Bulldogs Fall At George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Host George Washington took advantage of three unearned runs in the first inning and a complete-game pitching performance by Meghan Rico to hand Butler a 4-1 setback at the GW Softball Field on Saturday (April 6).  The setback left the Bulldogs with a split of the two-game Atlantic 10 Conference series.

The Colonials (12-17, 1-3 A-10) grabbed a 3-0 lead with two outs in the first inning.   Autumn Taylor provided the big blow with a two-run triple, while Chelsea Lenhart added a run-scoring single.  Butler looked to be out of trouble when starter Leah Bry retired two of the first three batters she faced, but an infield error set the stage for Taylor's decisive hit.

The three runs were more than enough for Rico.  She held Butler (12-17, 3-3 A-10) to one run on six hits through seven innings of work.  She struck out 10, while walking four.

The Bulldogs tallied their lone run in the third inning on a walk to Krosley Ogden, a double by Cassie Rupel and a run-scoring single by Kristin Boros.  George Washington added a final run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo home run by Victoria Valos.

Bry, who surrendered four runs on six hits, fell to 5-5 on the year.  She had nine strikeouts and no walks in four innings.  Jenny Esparza closed the game with two scoreless innings, striking out five.

Rupel paced Butler's attack with a pair of hits in four trips to the plate.

The Bulldogs will have a non-conference game at Ball State on Tuesday, April 9, before hosting a non-conference doubleheader against Morehead State on Wednesday, April 10.
