Butler Ends Season On A Winning Streak

SOLID FINISH:  Butler's softball team ended the 2013 season on the road with four consecutive victories, including a two-game sweep of defending Atlantic 10 Conference champion Massachusetts.  The four wins lifted Butler to 11-9 in A-10 play, but left the Bulldogs one-half game shy of a berth in the A-10 Tournament.  Overall, the Bulldogs posted a 22-24 record, including wins in 20 of their final 33 contests.  Senior pitcher Jenny Esparza sparkled on the final weekend of the regular season, picking up wins in three of the four road games.  She pitched a complete-game, three-hitter to beat Massachusetts in the first game of the four-game set and then combined with freshman Kristin Gutierrez on a 2-0 shutout of the Minutewomen in the second game.  The Butler righthander then closed out her collegiate career with a complete-game, two-hitter to defeat Rhode Island, 8-1.  The weekend effort earned Esparza A-10 Pitcher of the Week honors.
