Riley Carter To Play For Canadian National Team
Butler shortstop Riley Carter was one of 17 athletes selected to the Canadian Junior National Team, and she'll represent Canada at the 2013 International Softball Federation Junior World Championships in Brampton, Ontario. The international tournament, featuring 16 national teams, will be held, July 1-7.
Carter completed her first season at Butler last spring. She played in 45 games, all as a starter, and led the team in assists (60). She batted .209 in her rookie season and had four doubles and one home run among her 23 hits. She had 12 runs batted in, nine runs scored, three stolen bases and a .273 slugging percentage.
The Canadian Junior National Team will compete in Pool A, along with the United States, Puerto Rico, New Zealand, Great Britain, Korea, Venezuela and the Czech Republic. Canada's opening game will be on July 1 against Venezuela. The gold medal game will be played on Sunday, July 7.
In addition to her selection to the Canadian Junior National Team, Carter also was one of four players chosen as an alternate for the Canadian Senior National Team. The Canadian Senior National Team will compete at the U.S. World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City, Okla., the Canadian Open in Surrey, British Columbia and at the Pan American Games in Puerto Rico.
