Krista Hakola Named BIG EAST Player of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS—Butler senior Krista Hakola, who helped lead the Bulldogs to four wins in five games last week, has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week. She's the first Butler softball player to earn the league's Player of the Week honor.
Hakola batted .750 (six of eight) with five runs batted in while helping Butler to a pair of wins in a key, three-game BIG EAST series at Seton Hall. She drove in a pair of runs in Butler's 9-1 victory over the Pirates in the series' opener, and then she drove in the first two runs in the Bulldogs' 4-1 win in the series' finale.
The Butler first baseman also helped the Bulldogs to a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Illinois in a non-conference doubleheader earlier in the week. Eastern Illinois entered the twinbill with 34 victories.
For the week, Hakola batted .533 with eight hits, including two doubles, a home run and six RBIs. She had a .563 on-base percentage and a .867 slugging percentage for the five games.
Also recognized by the conference was sophomore Kristin Gutierrez, who was selected to the league's Weekly Honor Roll. The left-handed pitcher was 3-0 on the week with a 0.70 earned run average. She had nine strikeouts and just two walks in her three appearances. Gutierrez and teammate Leah Bry each had won BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors this spring.
Butler will close out the regular season with five consecutive home games, beginning with a non-conference doubleheader against Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday, April 29. The first game of that twinbill will start at 2 p.m.
